Causaly are doing genuinely important work — applied AI in biomedical research, helping pharmaceutical R&D teams find evidence-grounded answers from the world’s biomedical literature. Series C, well-funded, well-led, growing carefully.

The VPE role is open because the firm has scaled past the point where the existing engineering leadership can hold everything. The hire will own an engineering organisation of around seventy, split across applied ML, ML platform, application engineering, and SRE/platform, and will partner closely with the CTO on the next eighteen months of growth.

The interesting bit: this is one of the few applied AI businesses where the underlying science is genuinely substantive. The customers are people whose work matters. The product is being used in active R&D pipelines for major pharma. It is, frankly, harder to find applied AI businesses with this kind of substance than it ought to be.

Who fits: you’ve been VPE or equivalent at a 50-200 engineer scale-up. You can hold the technical conversation with senior ICs but you’ve moved past being one. You’ve shipped through at least one substantial scaling phase. Background in ML or scientific computing is a strong plus — but the room has people who can do the deep ML; what’s needed is the senior leader.

Compensation is £280-350k base plus equity that, at this stage, is worth meaningful money in the medium term. Hybrid, three days in the Holborn office.

Lead consultant: Tariq Ahmed. Founder-introduction available for serious candidates.
